Marygrace U Public Op

The American public has a lot to say on the matter of healthcare, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in particular. 47% of Americans want to repeal the act and 42% want it to stay in place. The public’s opinion in this matter is very important, so important that the issue has gone back to Congress. The Congress has agreed that the act needs to be revised. The act will be discussed in court around March and will be revealed to the public sometime in the summer. This issue is nothing new in politics. In one poll, it was shown the public opinion on whether or not healthcare should be provided by the national government. As of now, the average is 50% for government healthcare and 47% against.

The American public appears to be fairly split on the issue of college loans. While a small majority of 54% is in favor of the proposed changes to pay back federal loans, there is an almost equal group of 44% to 47% that don’t believe in the proposed changes. On top of that, 56% of likely voters are wary of how this will influence the national debt. There is also the matter of the fact that 40% of Americans don’t believe in governmental loans at all anymore. How can a country that is so worries about their rank in the world with education be so unwilling to work with their people? True, the ranking generally happens in lower grades, but isn’t college simply an extension of primary and secondary education?

On the war in Iraq, the American population has a fairly cut and dry outlook: it never should have happened. In fact, 54% of likely voters see the war as unjustified. There is an almost even number, at 57%, of people who are in favor of President Obama pulling troops from Iraq. When polled on the presidential approval rating, Americans who believe that Obama is doing an excellent to good job and those who believe he is doing poorly are tied at 41%.

In regards to the Occupy protestors, the American people are split. Are thy a nuisance, or do they have a valid point? 33% of likely voters are inclined to side with the protestors, but 43% are completely opposed. On top of that, 24% have yet to choose a side. For a movement that supposedly speaks for the 99%, it looks like you came up short by about, oh; I don’t know… 66%?

When it comes to jobs, the American public can be pretty picky. When it comes to America and the government being involved with jobs, 52% say that they trust the president to handle jobs. On the other hand, 43% trust the Republicans in Congress to deal with jobs. And what about those in favor of small business? 79% of Americans would prefer to see more small and local owned businesses. But isn’t that why America is so diverse, so that everyone can find what suits them best?

I did the same analysis about the war on Iraq and Americas public opinion about it. I found the same information you have too but the poll failed to mention how when the war first began it had a high approval rating. This is a perfect example of how much public opinion can flucuate over the years.

I noticed that the percentages for healthcare in America is about the same. I with many people in support of it, I thought the percentages would be more unbalanced. I wonder if the percentages are going to change within the next few months when Congress discusses the issue once more.

I agree completely with your poll on the Occupy protestors. They are supposed to be speaking for the 99%, but according to the poll, they are not. I'm with the side that thinks they are just a nuisance. However, in America everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I agree with your last poll about jobs. America is a place for everyone, and citizens feel far more comfortable with more small businesses than big government and buisnesses providing more jobs because small business owners are caring and passionate about what they do and sharing that with the country, unlike big business and government for the most part.

I liked the way you stated your claim in regards to the Occupy Movement protesters: "For a movement that supposedly speaks for the 99%, it looks like you came up short by about, oh, I don’t know… 66%?" Along with Michelle who previously commented, I also view the protesters as a nuisance. Quite honestly, I'm sick of them. I also view it as unsanitary and disgusting that they were going so long without showering. Its like "okay, you've made your point, we see you. Get on with your life and go get a job." It may seem like a harsh thing to say, but it's causing more stress for the rest of us especially Police Officers, those who have to pass the "campsite" everyday to get to work and their families.

I also did an article about Americans trusting small businesses with economic advice. I never really thought about it but it definitely makes sense.

I agree with about the occupy protesters, most of those people who are supposedly "protesting" doesn't really have a straight forward opinions or ideas and do not completely understand the meaning behind why the movement started in the first place.

I agree with your opinion on the student loan poll. America is worried about how education stacks up, yet nothing is done about it.
