Is Now a Good Time to Find a Job?

1. A major issue many Americans are dealing with right now is the constant decrease of jobs due to a decrease in the U.S. economy. When asking Americans if now is a good time to find a job only eight percent said yes, while ninty percent said no. These results are the worst Gallup has recorded in the past eleven years. Even those who are currently employed are unoptimistic about America's current job market. Those ranging from ages 18-29 are more optimistic about finding a job then those older than their age bracket. Americans are feeling this way because for the past several months everytime you turn on the news you hear about thousands of people who are losing their jobs. The economy is struggling so badly and it is affecting everyone, even those with jobs. The only way public opinion will change is if their becomes and increase in jobs. Obama is doing everything in his power to get his job's bill passed and if it is successful that could possibly change the public opinion of Americans. The public opinion has changed, prior to the recession, most Americans were employed and overall as a nation we were highly successful. Only recently has this lack of hope for jobs come to the forfront. You can't blame people for their lack of hope in finding a job when it seems like many are losing jobs. Yes the American people are very fickle, but their lack of hope is justifiable in this particular situation.

Can Americans Afford to Feed Their Family?

2. What we eat in our household everyday is something most of us take for granted. Lately people are struggling to afford all the food neceassary to feed their family on a regular basis. In the month of October the number of people who could afford all the food needed for their family was a record low of seventy-nine point four percent. Americans really are suffering from the current economic strain, prices for goods are going up while salary is staying the same. The overall public may be able to afford their food for their family, but it is still more of strain for all families then it was in years prior. The average American has so much to pay for between bills, gas, education and many other day to day activities that it seems as if food is being put on the back burner. In order for public opinion to change somethings gotta give. Food prices need to be lowered, Gas prices need to stop flucuating, or an increase pay in American salaries. Public opinion has obviously changed from before when it wasn't such a strain to go to the super market. Something needs to be done about this issue in order to ensure the well being of Americans. Yes, Americans are very fickle and when it comes to their groceries it all depends how much they must spend on other priorities.

Did Obama Make the Right Decision Announcing to Withdraw Troops?

3. The War in Iraq and been a major issue in America for quite some time now. As of a recent poll fifty-seven percent of Americans agree with Obama's plan to pull troops out of Iraq before the end of the year. This has helped to increase approval for Obama's foreign and military policy overall from last year. The polls also show that fifty-four percent of people say their was not justifiable reason for war. This is a prime example of the fickle minds of the American people. When War on Iraq was first announced it was a popular idea by many because of the affects on our country afterr 9/11. Now that we have been in their for so many years and no one knows exactly why we are fighting anymore, everyone wants out and is making exuses as to why we were even their in the first place. Public opinion has changed tremendously on the war in Iraq, and by taking out are troops Obama is pleasing the current public opinion. Although many are in favor, some believe withdrawing troops will have a negative affect upon our nation. The reason why public opinion about the war has dramactically changed is due to our length of time in Iraq, the number of men and women we have lost and the amount of damage it has done to the American debt. The entire length of the war in Iraq people have changed from feeling strongly for it to totally against, based upon what was going on over there at that particular time. It seems like now a days people just want to be done with the war in Iraq and bring our troops home.

Is Joe Paterno still a hero?

4. A major issue that has been in the news for the past week and half is the Sex Scandal that took place at Penn State. The weird thing about it is more Americans are concerned with the firing of Joe Paterno than what will happen to Sandusky, the man charged with raping these young boys. Overall thirty percent of Americans still have the same favorable opinion of Paterno that they have always had while fifty percent now have an unfavorable opinion. Joe Paterno has been the face of Penn State for quite sometime now and to go out of Penn State football the way did was a huge shock to people. Prior to this sex scandal many Americans considered Joe Paterno a hero and believed he would forever be a legend. His failure to go to the police after being informed of the sex scandal has made many lose trust in his overall character. He was a well respected individual who received much praise in his years as a coach but now he is being looked down upon. This again shows how fickle the American people can be, it takes years to build a reputation and it can be ruined in an instant. People respect the fact that he did try to take it to the head of the school, but what they don't understand is why he didn't take it to the police when nothing was done about the issue. Joe Paterno has lost a majority of the respect he has gained over the years and he will never get it back.

What is America's biggest problem?

5. When asked, many Americans say that our economic issues are the biggest problem facing America right now. Thirty-six percent say it is unemployment and jobs, thirty percent say it is the economy in general, and 10 percent say dissatisfation with the government are the most important problems facing America. These have been the major issues since February 2008 and have become more prevelant now with the decrease in unemployment in past few months. People see this as the major issue due to the fact that all are struggling with rising prices and decreasing employment. People aren't able to afford things that once were a major priority to them. Now a days, young couples are questioning whether they can afford a family due to the overall decrease in American economy. Prior to 2008 people had confidence in the economic system in America, but now that confidence is gone. In order to put an end to this negative public opinion, we need to build the American economy back up. The government needs to get the confidence back into the people and they can do so by providing more jobs. The average american person is very fickle but this view that our economic issues is America's biggest problem has been believed for quite sometime now. In order for this to change and for people to not view the economy as our biggest problem, America needs to get back on its feet again.

I find it interesting as to the amount of people who want America to leave Iraq. Of course it's evident the most of the American population wants to stop the war, but I'm curious as to how many people were in favor of the war in 2001. I think it would be almost comical to see the percentages of how many people approved the war, and then switched opinions ten years later.

I agree with you, Jess. The patriotism that followed the 9/11 attacks was outrageous and over the years this patriotism has dwindled. The present state of the Iraq War reminds me of Vietnam. The Iraq War has gone for many years like Vietnam and it seems that it has produced no results.

i wonder if older people are too jaded by previous job problems to be optimistic about finding a job this time around. or maybe they're just worried that a younger person will beat them out. at any rate, they just seem jaded...

I believe Joe Paterno is still a hero even with this whole disgrace going on. However, he isn't as honorable as he would've been if this never happened.

You made a very clear, distinct point that I have always believed in: "it takes years to build a reputation and it can be ruined in an instant." Unfortunately for Joe Paterno, his failure to "do more" will override all of his accomplishments and 400+ wins. People will now remember him more so for what he did wrong rather than his prestigious achievements. It really is a shame, but it's just the way it is. Like the old saying goes: "The bigger they are, the harder they fall."
