HERO AND HACK JANUARY 20

HERO
NEWT GINGRICH!

By Emily Gumpper

"Every person in here knows personal pain," Gingrich continued. "Every person in here has had someone close to them go through personal things. To take an ex-wife, and make it two days before a primary a significant question in a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything I can imagine."

Gingrich added that he was "astounded that CNN would take trash like that" and use it to open a presidential primary debate.

I like the fact that NEWT DID NOT HOLD BACK AT ALL! He completely stood up for himself and bashed the media! The funny part is that as some media sources are taking him down for the comments he made other media sources are raising him up!

HACK: Newt Gingrich

I am hacking Newt for the week because he publicly announced that

he's one of the people I'd call on for advice", referring to Sarah Palin. He also said that he is considering giving her a major position in his administration if he is elected. After watching "Sarah Palin's Alaska", I dont know how anyone has respect for this woman's opinion. I have now lost respect for Gingrich as well. Bad Newt.

HACK: Iowa Caucus

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/story/2012-01-19/santorum-wins-iowa-caucuses/52684024/1?csp=34news

It is embarrassing when a state that takes so much pride and glory in being the first state to hold a caucus for presidential nomination messes up tallying the votes—especially when it affects the true results. Mitt Romney was declared to have won on the January 3 caucus by eight votes, but according to the official certification Santorum was the actual winner by 34 votes. Iowa GOP officials knew that they had eight precincts’ votes missing and that it was too close to call, but yet they went onto announce that Romney won. If the Iowa caucus wants to maintain its status as a credible organization, then in the future they have to be much more careful to avoid the embarrassment.

     Hack--Lee County

The big winner of the Iowa caucus could have been Rick Santourm? This sounds crazy because Mitt Roomney won by only 8 votes. How can a county that has been apart of the Iowa caucus for years forget to sumbit certian official forms. It sounds "fishy" that the first major caucus of the 2012 Presidential election was at fault. I was surprised that Roomney won because he did not bother to campagin in Iowa. Whereas, Santorum focused a lot of effort on Iowa. Plus, Santorum can easily relate his campagin views to these Midwest voters. I am hacking the Lee County Iowa because they "forgot" to sumbit the offical Form E.

Hack: Iowa Caucus Failed Tally

Marygrace Urmson

It’s not over until the fat lady sings, Iowa. You shouldn’t have tallied until you were sure you had everyone’s vote. That was just a bad call. Not only did you smear the name of the Iowa Caucus, you also hurt Romney a little bit. This mishap will have a huge affect on the immediate actions in his campaign. The miscount was bad enough, but a miscount of those proportions? Badly done, Iowa. Badly done.

HERO: Newt Gingrich - Sarah Hammer

This video says it all.

CNN opened the political debate with a question to Gingrich concerning his ex-wife's claims. Gingrich went on to talk about how the media is so fogged and destructive, and how it prohibits good politicians from running for office. He then goes off saying how he is appalled that CNN would open a debate with a question about an ex-wife.   All I have to say is: WATCH THE VIDEO. I was cheering for Newt the whole time.

Hack: Iowa Caucus Workers

Eight precints did not have the required documents accounted for, yet the results were all tallied and Romney was claimed as winner.  Not only was this severely unfair to Santorum, the rightful winner, but it makes Romney look bad as well.  This also reflects badly on the Republican Party and the Iowa caucus' respectable reputation on a whole.  The original results showed Mitt Romney, victorious over Rick Santorum by a mere eight points, but the true results show Rick Santorum beating Mitt Romney by a whole thirty - four points!  It is absolutely unacceptable that, in the midst of media watching everything (especially mistakes) and the technology available to ensure that all forms had been received, this scandelous mistake was made.  No votes should have been tallied until it was made absolutely certain that each county had ALL forms submitted and accounted for.

HACK: IOWA REPUBLICAN PARTY

This week I chose to HACK the Iowa Republican Party for their laziness and inaccuracy regarding their reports of the caucus results from January 3rd. According to their initial report, Mitt Romney had won the Iowa caucus by a mere eight votes. However, after recalculating the results of the votes from the precincts that actually qualified, Rick Santorum finished above Mitt Romney with 34 more votes. It was also revealed that the Iowa GOP could not declare an actual winner because there were too many errors that could not be resolved, including the ineligible votes from eight precincts who did not follow the rules and guidelines. I feel that this whole situation should have never happened in the first place, especially in the world that we live in today with the constant advancing of technology and the accuracy of counting votes precisely.  I also believe that it is unacceptable for any state to release a final result regarding any election for that matter, without finalizing and double-checking all of the votes. If the Iowa GOP had released that Santorum was the actual winner of the Iowa caucus, this election could be going in Santorum’s favor.

Hack: Lee County, Iowa

It has been all over the  news that in all actuality, Mitt Romney did not win the Iowa caucus held on January 3rd earlier this year.  In fact, Rick Santorum beat out Romney by about 34 votes.  The reason for this is because votes from Lee County, Iowa were not counted.  For some reason, their votes were never received.  GOP Chairman Don Lucas says that the votes were verified and sent, but the official "Form E" document was not submitted.  The reason as to why is unknown, but either way it is unacceptable, because this changes everything.  It was irresponsible and should not have happened. Santorum would have won from the beginning if the Lee County votes were there.

HERO: Rick Perry

Rick Perry has announced that he will be dropping out of the race. He's my hero for the week because he went to bat for Newt Gingrich. As Mike just previously mentioned, Newt's ex-wife is stirring up trouble right before the South Carolina primary which takes place on Saturday. This is a very critical event and each person needs as much support as they can get, not adversity. However, Rick Perry endorsed him. "Newt's not perfect, but who among us is?" Perry said. I admire him for standing up for Newt and expressing his respect for him. Perry also referred to Gingrich as "a conservative visionary." Some are pretty surprised that Perry dropped out since a lot of people expected him to go pretty far. Although, I think it's admirable of him to put his pride aside and face the facts that, well in his own words admit: "there is no viable path forward for me."

HACK: Marianne Gingrich

I am hacking Newt Gingrich’s ex wife Marianne for doing an exclusive interview with ABC news. Their relationship is in the past and she is now just showing up as a publicity stunt to bring a surging Newt down in South Carolina. She is just using previous relationship as a reason to seem newsworthy and it’s not right.

Hero: President Barack Obama

John Conway

My hero of the week is President Obama for turning down the Keystone XL oil pipeline project. While the project is one that could potentially create many jobs, there are questions about its safety and how it will affect the environment. The President has yet to establish a clear stance on the issue. That is why he is to be hero'd. The reason he turned this permit is clear; it is not an issue of putting party platform or environmentalist concerns before potential jobs or about outsourcing energy to other powers such as Chine, as the GOP would argue. Rather, it is a refusal to be bullied by Republicans in Congress. The Republicans placed a 60-day timeline on approving the project, seeking to strong-arm the President into approving it. However, he did not back down, and turned down the proposal so as to grant the State Department enough time to sufficiently examine the project plans and discern whether or not it would be a positive thing.

Hero: Marco Rubio and Roy Blunt

Taylor Howard

This week i chose to hero two lawmakers of SOPA and PIPA. As we all know yesterday many websites shut down in protest of the "Stop Online Piracy Act" and "Protect IP Act". These short protest had a huge impact on many Americans, including the actual lawmakers themselves. Two Republican senators in particular, Roy Blunt and Marco Rubio withdrew their support of the bill. Both believe the bill is very flawed and instead of rushing to get it passed, they believe the bill needs to be reviewed on every aspect. They want to address the Internet piracy while protecting free and open access to the internet.

HACK

lawyers from Sullivan and Cromwell firm AND Supreme Court

The Alabama court has ruled to cut off appeals for Cory Maples, an Alabama death row inmate. Unfortunately, Maples missed a deadline to appeal the abandonment of his lawyers. The Maples’ lawyers from Sullivan & Cromwell left the firm and no one picked up the case. The Supreme Court ruled saying “a veritable perfect storm of misfortune".

Maples have every right for a new court case hearing.  He had no intention of missing the deadline to the appeal, he was left unaided therefore left with no choice.

Hack: President Obama

 http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/19/smallbusiness/keystone_pipeline/

I am hacking President Obama for rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline project. The expansion of the pipeline promised the towns of Fairbury and Steele City a bounce back from the economic downturn. The residents of these towns, who run businesses, were crushed when Obama rejected the expansion, because they have been struggling to make a profit. When the first line of pipe was built in 2010, local hotels, shops, and restaurants were filled with construction crews and engineers. Now these businesses are empty and working with minimum staff. The owners believe that if Obama approved this project, they would be able to double their employees and increase their revenue. This project could of created thousands of jobs, but it could of also gave hope and sustainability to the small businesses in Nebraska.

HERO: Rick Perry

This week, I chose to hero Rick Perry because of his decision to back out of the GOP race. But more importantly, because he now backs Newt Gingrich. After winning both Iowa* and New Hampshire, it seemed as if Mitt Romney was way ahead in the race. However, with a little push from Perry, Gingrich is now catching up, and will make the GOP race much more interesting.
